Malecón Walk
The Malecón Walk is one of the most characteristic historical and scenic spaces of Murcia, a unique piece of hydraulic engineering that over time transformed into one of the most appreciated walking places by the people of Murcia. Its origin dates back to the 15th century, when a containment wall was built to protect the city from frequent floods caused by the rises of the Segura River and the flows from the Guadalentín. Over the centuries, it was reinforced and rebuilt on several occasions, reaching during the 18th century the monumental configuration that, in essence, has lasted to this day.
With a length of over a kilometer and a half, the Malecón runs elevated above the traditional orchard, establishing a unique transition between the urban core and the agricultural landscape that historically has defined the identity of Murcia. Its wide promenade, bordered by solid walls and continuous benches, offers a privileged perspective over the orchard environment and maintains the character of an open and welcoming space that it has had for centuries.
Next to the promenade lies the current Malecón Garden, emerging from the integration of the old Botanical Garden and various historical orchards that occupied this western sector of the city. Nowadays it is one of the most popular gardens in the city, a venue for various events and celebrations throughout the year. We can find it especially crowded during the September Fair, when the garden hosts the "Huertos", places where orchard associations recreate "ventorrillos" or taverns with traditional Murcian food.
The entrance to the garden and to the Malecón promenade is one of the points through which our "Best of Murcia" walking tour passes. Do not hesitate to contact us if you want more information or to book.
