Saint Catherine's Church in Murcia

Saint Catherine's Church (iglesia de Santa Catalina) stands in the square of the same name, a space that for centuries constituted the main civic and commercial center of Murcia. Its origins date back to the years following the Christian conquest when the old parish of Saint Catherine was organized over one of the neighborhoods of the Islamic medina. The parish was already open for worship in 1272, making it one of the oldest Christian foundations in the city. Various archaeological and documentary findings suggest the prior existence of a mosque in this urban sector, although the exact location of that building has not been determined with certainty.

The square of Saint Catherine is one of the spaces we cover in our walking tour "The Best of Murcia", a two-hour journey through all the must-see places in the city. This itinerary is the ideal option to get to know Murcia, always in small groups and with a qualified guide, graduated in history and an expert in historical heritage. The current appearance of the church is the result of numerous transformations accumulated over the centuries. The temple retains the characteristic plan of a single-nave church with lateral chapels open between the buttresses, a typology widely spread in Murcia since the late Middle Ages, which served as a basis for later Baroque reforms. Important decorative interventions were carried out during the 18th century, while at the end of the 19th century, the architect Justo Millán remodeled the main façade in a Neo-Gothic style and renewed much of the interior of the building.

Historically, the tower performed functions that went beyond the religious sphere. The municipal clock was installed in it, and its bells transmitted alarm signals against possible incursions from the coast. Even today, it retains within its interior structures of great antiquity that some authors relate to construction phases prior to the current temple.

The artistic heritage of Saint Catherine gathers works of particular interest for understanding Murcian sculpture of the 18th and 19th centuries. The temple is presided over by an image of Saint Catherine attributed to Nicolás Salzillo, while among the chapels, the Christ of Patience, also a work of Nicolás Salzillo, and the Dolorosa made by his son Francisco Salzillo around 1742 stand out. Likewise, various historical canvases, a Renaissance relief of the Assumption of the Virgin in Carrara marble, and remnants of the painted decorations by the Italian artist Pablo Sistori, responsible for some of the most outstanding ornamental programs of Baroque Murcia, are preserved.
